The Clerk of the House is the principal administrative and procedural officer of the Legislative Council. The Clerk ensures that all legislative activities are conducted lawfully, efficiently, and in accordance with established rules and standing orders. The office provides essential support to members, enabling the House to function with order, transparency, and procedural integrity.
Responsibilities
- Manages the administrative operations of the Legislative House
- Prepares sitting agendas, order papers, notices, and official correspondence
- Records proceedings, maintains legislative journals, and safeguards official documents
- Provides guidance to members on parliamentary rules, procedures, and legislative processes
- Coordinates the implementation and follow-up of House resolutions, motions, and decisions
- Supervises legislative staff and ensures the smooth running of House sessions
- Supports legislative planning, documentation, and archival management
The Clerk of the House plays a critical role in sustaining the legislative process. By upholding due process, ensuring accurate records, and supporting members in the performance of their duties, the Clerk maintains the integrity and continuity of the legislative institution.
