Residents of Ayobo-Ipaja have been called upon to take collective responsibility for their environment as the Lagos State Government reintroduces the monthly environmental sanitation exercise after a decade-long suspension.
The exercise, scheduled to resume on April 25, 2026, will take place between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., with authorities emphasizing its importance in promoting public health and sustainable living.
Speaking at a stakeholders’ sensitization meeting, the Executive Chairman of Ayobo-Ipaja Local Council Development Area, Hon. Dr. Agbaje Lukmon Abiodun, described the initiative as a crucial step toward restoring environmental discipline and strengthening community participation.
According to him, maintaining a clean environment is fundamental to preventing disease outbreaks, protecting drainage systems, and reducing flooding risks—especially in a rapidly growing community.
“This is more than a routine exercise; it is a call to rebuild our culture of communal responsibility,” he said, urging residents, traders, artisans, and transport operators to actively participate.
Also speaking, the council’s Director of Sanitation, Babajide Rachel, highlighted that the reintroduction of the exercise aligns with existing environmental laws and reinforces civic duty among residents.
She noted that while participation remains voluntary, it is strongly encouraged, stressing that sanitation promotes behavioral change, environmental awareness, and a shared sense of responsibility.
Officials outlined key activities for residents during the exercise, including clearing gutters and drainage blockages, proper bagging and disposal of waste, and avoiding indiscriminate dumping of refuse in unauthorized areas such as road medians and open spaces.
Authorities warned that poor waste disposal practices contribute significantly to flooding and create breeding grounds for diseases, underscoring the need for sustained behavioral change.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to ongoing public awareness campaigns and collaboration with environmental agencies to ensure compliance and effectiveness.
Stakeholders at the meeting were tasked with mobilizing their communities and promoting adherence to sanitation guidelines.
With the revival of the monthly exercise, the council expressed optimism that collective efforts would help transform Ayobo-Ipaja into a cleaner, healthier, and more environmentally responsible community.
The event featured the presence of Chairman Hon. Dr. Agbaje Lukmon Vice chairman, Otunba Ladi Oluwaloni, Secretary to the Local Government Hon.Prince Ahmad Yusuf, Leader of Legislative Arm Hon. Bamidele Farooq, Council Manager , Mrs Bankole Bawa, amongst others Stakeholders.
